What Type of Oil Does My MAZDA CX-9 Need?

July 17th, 2023 by

The Mazda CX-9 has long been a renowned model in the family SUV category and, as with any model, it requires routine maintenance at a Mazda dealership. Which Mazda CX-9 oil type is best? Can you use another brand of oil other than what’s recommended? We’re answering all of your Mazda oil change questions right here.

MAZDA CX-9 Oil Type Requirements

Always stick to the motor oil recommended in the model’s vehicle user manual. For the 2023 model, the suggested oil is SAE 5W-30. This contrasts with most other Mazda models, which require SAE 0W-20.

Apart from SAE 5W-30 oil, you should also verify the oil brand is approved by the American Petroleum Institute (API) as “Certified for Gasoline Engines.” This means the oil formulation meets emission system protection standards established by the International Lubricant Standardization and Approval Committee (ILSAC). ILSAC is spearheaded by high-level members of prominent U.S. and Japanese auto manufacturing companies.

Oil Change Interval

The manual recommends an oil change every 7,500 miles, or once a year, whichever one comes first. Keep in mind this is under normal driving conditions. If you drive under severe conditions, such as short-distance commuting, or under extreme temperatures, then you may need an oil change more frequently.

Can I Change the Oil Myself?

We recommend leaving the oil change to a certified technician at a Mazda dealership. A certified mechanic has the recommended oil in stock. The technician can also perform secondary checks, such as determining whether the vehicle requires a routine oil change or a more comprehensive oil flush.
