What Oil Does My MAZDA3 Need?

April 15th, 2024 by

When scheduling an oil change, what’s the suggested Mazda3 oil type? Not all motor oils are created equal, and the Mazda manufacturer has specified the optimal oil type for the compact sedan and hatchback. Our service department at Superior Mazda never deviates from the manufacturer’s oil change guidelines — learn what we recommend.

MAZDA3 Oil Type Recommendation

The suggested oil is always the oil type outlined in the vehicle user manual. For the Mazda3, both the sedan and hatchback variants, the manual recommends using SAE 5W-30 engine oil.

SAE is an acronym for the Society of Automotive Engineers, meaning it’s approved by the organization. The 5W means it’s optimized for maximum flow under winter conditions. The 30 is a measurement of how well it flows under normal temperatures.

Most modern oil brands with this designation use a synthetic or synthetic blend containing additives that improve viscosity and lubrication.

Can You Use Another Oil Type?

A frequently asked question is whether it’s acceptable to use another motor oil variety that isn’t SAE 5W-30. Some car owners wish to use a more affordable oil type, or an oil that they have sitting in their garage.

You can use another oil, and your car will continue to operate. However, we don’t recommend deviating from the manufacturer’s recommendation. SAE 5W-30 is what’s deemed optimal for the model’s standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and available SKYACTIV®-G 2.5-liter Turbo engine.

Using another oil type may result in diminished performance, reduced fuel economy, and more frequent oil changes.
