What Oil Does My Car Take?

Engine oil change. Car repair.

Our technicians are often asked the question, “What oil does my car take?” We can’t stress the importance of using the right oil type. The specific oil you need will vary depending on your car model and year.

Read on to learn why oil type matters and how it contributes to vehicle performance.

What Oil Does My Car Take?

When customers ask our technicians about the oil their car needs, our crew always give the same answer. We tell them to use the oil recommended in their vehicle user manual. We have this information on hand, and we never deviate from the recommended oil when performing an oil change as part of a scheduled maintenance.

Oil requirements vary between models. For the Mazda3, for example, the recommended oil is SAE 5W-30. For the Mazda Miata, it’s SAE 0W-20.

In any case, the recommendation always includes oils with the SAE designation. This means it has been approved for gasoline engines by the Society of Automotive Engineers.

Can I Use a Different Oil?

Another question we get often is whether it’s acceptable to use another oil type. Car owners often ask this because they wish to use a lower-cost oil type to save money.

If you use another oil, your car will still operate. However, you may not get the best performance nor the best mileage. Mazda manufacturers recommend an oil type based on oil additives and formulations that are optimal for each model’s specific engine build.
