If you don’t know a lot about cars, it’s can be scary when you notice something off with yours, like a strange noise or weird smell. And if you spot a stain on your driveway, you may start panicking. But before you get too carried away, our Mazda service center has some tips.

What’s the Color?

The first thing to do if you notice a leak is to try to figure out what the fluid is, and the color can provide insight. If it’s brown or black, there’s a good chance that it is oil. If it’s red or green, it’s probably antifreeze. If it’s brightly colored, it may be windshield wiper fluid.

Where’s it Coming From?

You may also be able to tell where it’s coming from by the location of the leak. The engine and cooling system are in the front of the car, while the transmission is in the middle. If the leak seems to be originating from an area around a wheel, it may be brake fluid you’re seeing.

When Does the Leak Occur?

This one is harder to diagnose, but it’s very important. If your car is leaking when parked, in many cases this is something relatively superficial that may not require a big repair. If, however, the leak happens when the car is running, this could be a more serious issue.

Don’t Wait to Have a Leak Looked At

No matter what may be leaking from your car, it’s vital to have it looked at quickly. Leaks aren’t going to fix themselves on their own, and the faster you get a repair, the less extensive the work – and the price – will be. To have your car examined by pros, make an appointment with the service center at Superior Mazda.
