What Does the Air Filter Do?

The air filter is instrumental in keeping your engine clean. By preventing dirt and debris from getting trapped in your engine, the air filter ensures your engine will run as it should without complications.

How Do You Know the Air Filter Should Be Changed?

There are some warning signs that indicate that you need a new air filter, including:

• It’s Very Dirty: When they’re new, air filters are white. If your filter is a light gray, it may be able to be cleaned. If it’s a dark gray or black, however, you will need a new one.
• It’s Old: Even if the filter doesn’t look too dirty, over time they stop doing their job so well. This is why it’s recommended to change them every 12,000 to 15,000 miles or every other time you change your oil.
• Drop in Gas Mileage: When an air filter gets clogged up with dirt, it limits the airflow that can get to the engine. The result of this is that the engine has to work a lot harder. This means that it burns up more gas, which hurts your fuel economy.
• Engine Start Troubles: A clear sign that something is wrong is if your car won’t start right away. Again, this could be due to a clogged air filter. When the engine doesn’t get enough air, it can prevent the spark plugs from sparking properly.
