Does MAZDA Use Synthetic Oil?

November 6th, 2023 by

Does Mazda use synthetic oil? We get this question a lot from guests who schedule maintenance at our service department. Learn what motor oil variety is optimal for your make and model and why it matters for maintaining factory performance.

Does MAZDA Use Synthetic Oil?

When it comes to oil recommendations, we always tell customers the same thing; refer to their vehicle user manual, which outlines the manufacturer-recommended oil. This may differ between models, year, and engine type.

For the Mazda MX-5 Miata with a 2.0-liter engine, for instance, it requires SAE 0W-20. For the Mazda CX-9, the recommendation is SAE 5W-30. The SAE stands for the Society of Automotive Engineers and the designation means the organization approves it for use on gasoline engines.

It should be noted that most oils with the SAE classification utilize a synthetic formulation, or a synthetic blend at a minimum, thus fulfilling Mazda manufacturer suggestions.

Can I Use Non-Synthetic Oils?

While you can use non-synthetic oils, we don’t recommend it. Modern Mazda vehicles need a synthetic oil or a synthetic blend. The formulas contain additives required of contemporary engines to offset heat, contamination, and oil degradation. If you use conventional oil that lacks the necessary additives, the vehicle may not get optimal fuel economy, and oil changes may be required before the suggested intervals.

Using non-synthetic oil may save you a few dollars in the short term, but you’ll end up spending more at the fuel station and on auto maintenance.
