2024 MAZDA CX-90: What’s Under the Hood?

June 16th, 2023 by

The upcoming 2024 Mazda CX-90 is expected to be the manufacturer’s largest model, slotting above the Mazda CX-9. What’s under the hood of this three-row SUV that makes it a solid and reliable performer? We’re exploring the inner workings of this exciting new Mazda vehicle.

Performance

What’s under the hood depends on which model configuration you aim for. The base variant is a 3.3-liter Inline-6 Turbo engine. The base version produces 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque. Buyers also have the choice of a more potent version of the same engine that delivers 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque.

Regardless of the engine type, the engine is mated to an eight-speed shiftable automatic transmission. This transmission utilizes a clutch pack instead of a traditional torque converter for improved acceleration.

Drivetrain and Drive Modes

The power is amplified via the system’s i-ACTIV AWD® that automatically responds to terrain changes. With the inclusion of the brand’s Mi-Drive, easily switch between four drive modes: Normal, Sport, Off-road, and Towing. The manufacturer also incorporated its Kinematic Posture Control system that applies automatic braking to reduce vehicle body roll.

PHEV Version

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 also comes in a plug-in hybrid version. Under the hood of the PHEV version is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a 68kW electric motor.

Towing Capacity

With the combination of the engine, transmission, and i-ACTIV AWD® comes impressive towing prowess. The three-row SUV can tow up to 5,000 lbs. For comparison, the Mazda CX-9 tows up to 3,500 lbs.
