Signs Your MAZDA Car Battery Is Dying

Mazda Service

Did you know that the typical car battery lasts three to five years? The exact length depends on where you live, how often you drive, and how frequently you bring your car in for Mazda maintenance. Eventually the battery will die, and here are some of the most common signs that your battery needs to be repaired or replaced.

A Rotten-Egg Smell Under the Hood

One of the most obvious — and most pungent — signs of a dying battery is a rotten-egg smell under the hood of your car. This odor is the result of leaking battery acid.

Corrosion on the Battery Terminals

A powdery blue-green substance appearing on the battery terminals is another sign of leaking battery acid. While this can be cleaned off by our Superior Mazda service technicians, it’s a sure sign that you need a new car battery.

Warped Battery Case

The case that holds your car’s battery is rectangular in shape. The older the battery gets, the more likely it is that the case will warp and change shape. This is especially true in extreme weather, when old batteries are more susceptible to heat and cold.

Swelling or cracking in the battery case may be another sign that your car’s battery is dying.

Electrical Issues

Your car’s battery powers several important Mazda parts that comprise the car’s electrical system. When the battery is dying, you may notice electrical issues such as:

  • Dimming headlights
  • Flickering dashboard lights
  • Power windows and doors that are slow to respond or non-functioning
  • Cell phone not charging when you plug it in

Clicking Sound When You Turn the Key

A car battery creates a charge for the starter, which in turn starts the engine. When the battery isn’t providing enough energy, you’ll probably hear a clicking sound when you turn the key. Alternatively, the engine might take longer to turn over.

In either case, the battery is dying and a trip to our Mazda dealership is in order.
